Despite this winter’s snow and bitter temperatures, students at the Wesley Community Center have been hard at work preparing to pass their high school equivalency or Work Keys exam. Located in West Dayton, classes are held at the Wesley Community Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays with instructor Cheryl Anderson.
Since the fall, students have enjoyed weekly tutoring every Thursday with volunteers Richard Schultze, who also functions as Secretary on the Wesley Community Center’s Board of Directors. Richard primarily works one-on-one with students in math, but he brings a wealth of knowledge in all areas and is an invaluable asset to the program. Thank you, Richard, for your dedication and for making a difference in the lives of our students!
In December, student Candice Davis attended the Adult Diploma Program orientation and completed her required bridge class at the Wesley Center. In early March, Candice passed the third and final Work Keys section and in the coming months plans to complete the STNA program. Regarding her journey, Candice writes, “I started coming to the Wesley Center in November of 2017 to do my WEP hours and get my GED; I was then told about the Adult Diploma Program and decided to go that route. I have had some obstacles along the way, but I persevered and made it here! I have been homeless, without transportation, didn't have a job, and have been going through depression. I went to orientation in December 2018, and I am now in my bridge classes and have a part-time job driving for the Wesley Center. I'm now going to do STNA and work my way up to becoming a nurse. In everything I have been through, deciding to go through this program and finishing will open up so many opportunities for me, which in the long run, will make me and my children's lives so much better and easier!”
