Dayton, OH – A first-of-its-kind partnership between Sinclair College and the Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) will provide job-focused training opportunities for the region’s advanced manufacturing industry, targeting a regional need for more skilled workers with experience in robotics automation.
Collaborating through the partnership, Sinclair and the MVCTC will deliver a series of introductory robotics training courses aimed at providing participants with the basic skills, knowledge and hands-on experience needed for this growing industry. Prior to the launch of the courses, Sinclair and the MVCTC will host two public information sessions, providing interested participants with an understanding of what the training will cover, how the registration process will work, and the types of jobs available in the industry.
“This is a targeted partnership that addresses an immediate need for our region’s manufacturing employers,” said Deb Norris, Senior Vice President for Sinclair Workforce Development. “Sinclair and the MVCTC will be providing training that improves career opportunities for both incumbent workers who are looking to upgrade their skill set as well as those looking to land a job in a well-paying industry that has positions to fill.”
Three primary robotics systems are actively used by the majority of the region’s advanced manufacturing businesses, and the training courses will focus on these systems. Each robotic system will be covered as a stand-alone course. A WorkKeys skills assessment administered through the Montgomery County Job Center will be required before course registration. Each training course carries a value of $600, and has been reduced to a cost $50 per participant, which is refunded upon successful completion.
“The MVCTC-Sinclair College advanced manufacturing and robotics partnership is a show of support for our business and industry partners,” said Dr. Nick Weldy, Superintendent/CEO of MVCTC. “As the two institutions work as a team to transform the workforce shortage problem in manufacturing across the Miami Valley region, it will be the employers and potential employees who will see the greatest benefit. We at MVCTC are excited to be part of this initiative which will result in a sizable positive impact on many communities.”
Advanced manufacturing is a cornerstone of the region’s economy, yielding some of the highest wages for all jobs. Regionally, the industry carries an annual payroll of more than $6 billion, supported by nearly 2,500 companies and more than 110,000 employees. There are an estimated 30,000 installed industrial robots in manufacturing facilities across Ohio, and a recent job survey showed approximately 600 open positions for robotics operators and programmers in the state.
“As a workforce development partner with MVCTC and Sinclair Community College, Yaskawa America, Motoman Robotics Division is proud and excited to support their new partnership for an advanced manufacturing/robotics training program,” said Bob Graff, Senior Sales Manager, Yaskawa America. “This new training model is a workforce development milestone that addresses the ever-growing need for industrial certified robotic jobs along the I-75 corridor.”
