Spotlight on Plumbing
Tim Evans has been teaching Plumbing for MVCTC Adult Education since January of 2002. Prior to becoming an instructor, Tim was a Skilled Tradesman in Plumbing at Delphi in Kettering. In discussions with Mike Sizemore, MVCTC Adult Education Trades Coordinator, during a project at Delphi, Tim shared his desire to share his professional knowledge with others and make a contribution to his chosen trade – Plumbing. Mike suggested he could accomplish both goals through teaching. Reflecting on his teaching experiences, Tim shared, “As any teacher will admit there are challenges at times, but the joy of the experience completely outshines the rough days.” Tim added, “I especially like seeing and talking with the many different students I’ve kept in touch with as to what they have been able to accomplish in the trade.” Tim noted his favorite student memory was a young man who had grown up without a father figure. The young man had missed out on learning how to use simple hand tools until he enrolled in the MVCTC Plumbing class. As a result of the NCCER Core instruction, he learned the proper use of hand tools early in the Program. Tim remembers the student’s excitement and satisfaction when he was able to assemble his daughter’s bicycle for her birthday. When asked what made him most proud about being a member of the MVCTC staff, Tim responded, “Getting to work with some of the best tradesmen/instructors around is the highlight of this job. It is especially rewarding when we get to work together and help each other on group projects and offer expertise that may cross over to another trade such as Electrical or HVAC-R.” Tim also enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, listening to music and hiking trails. As a profession, Plumbing is expected to grow 25% over the next decade. The potential median wage earnings from the US Department of Labor for the country are over $50,000 annually.
