Nathan Yancey, Electronics Class of 1997
Englewood, Ohio - Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) 1997 Trotwood-Madison graduate, Nathan Yancey, used the skills he learned at MVCTC to lead to a career as a Technical Director for ESPN in Los Angeles, California. Yancey works on a wide variety of productions ranging from the NBA Finals to ESPN SportsCenter.
Nathan shared, “MCVTC gave me the structure and discipline needed to succeed in a high stress and unforgiving environment. MVCTC Instilled great troubleshooting techniques that I still use to this day, despite most of the technology I learned in electronics 97' now being obsolete. MVCTC gave me the base I needed to land a position in television before and while attending college.”
Nathan’s story in his own words:
“My first experience with working in television was while I was still a senior at MVCTC. I job shadowed an editor with Dayton local TV station WDTN TV2. I was later told that during this job shadow session they were impressed with my knowledge of electronics and after graduating WDTN offered me a job working as an Operating Engineer which included Maintenance, Master Control, Transmissions, Audio Engineering and Technical Directing duties. From 1997-1999, I worked the TV station job and a second job installing car navigation systems for Circuit City all while pursuing an Electronics Engineering degree through a dual admission program at University of Dayton/Sinclair Community College. In 1999, I accepted a job in San Diego as an Audio Engineer for a newly launched FOX affiliate. At this position, I designed, operated, and maintained all audio and communications related technology for the entire building and all shows produced at the facility. After 2 years, I was promoted to Technical Director. While at this position, I also freelanced doing live sporting events. Clients included professional sports franchises such as San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Chargers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, LA Kings, San Francisco Giants and many others. In 2005, I accepted a Technical Director job with FOX News in Los Angeles working on various FOX programming. In 2009, I left FOX to work with a local Los Angeles station KTLA5, the number one news station in Los Angeles. In 2012, I was recruited and hired by ESPN to work at a brand new state-of-the-art studio facility in downtown Los Angeles. Since starting at ESPN, I have worked on nearly 2500 live studio shows (English and Spanish), over 300 NBA games including four NBA finals, two MLB World Series, four X Games as well as the Olympics and Special Olympics. These shows were not only broadcast nationwide here in the U.S. but also to 192 other countries around the world. I contribute my success at these positions largely to the skills I learned while enrolled in the Electronics program at MVCTC.
