Ally Foster, Dental Assisting Alumnus Class of 2006

10/10/2019

I knew I wanted to go into dental when I was a sophomore in high school. I had recently had my braces off and loved the feeling of confidence that I gained in my smile when I talked to people. I knew then I wanted to help others achieve that same confidence as well. I went to MVCTC my junior and senior years of high school. Even though I missed not seeing some of my friends back at my home school I gained a lot of new friendships with others who showed the same career interest as myself.

Mrs. Johnson was our teacher then who showed a great passion for the field. She pushed us all to do the best that we could. She helped us prepare for our future not only by physical appearance but mentally as well. When I was a senior in high school I was involved in SkillsUSA which showed us great leadership skills. By the time I was a senior I was prepared to take my CDA/Radiology license and passed on the first try.

Middle of my senior year, I was enrolled in a co-op program with Dr. Karl Espeleta D.D.S. I enjoyed being able to leave school early and head to work to get in-office experience and gain more knowledge.

In the dental field technology is always changing. It's a field where you have to be on your toes and willing to learn each day even after being in the career this long (I'm now 32 years old) I still leave work learning something new.

After a couple of years of getting experience under my belt I knew then I wanted to do more. I attended a class at Sinclair and received my Coronal Polishing license which gave me the ability to polish patients' teeth when needed after they were cleaned.

I attended Sinclair Community College in 2009 and received my Expanded Functions Dental Assistant license in July of 2010 which gives me expanded duties to do in the office. I have the ability to place restorations in teeth such as fillings and also design crowns on a cerec computer.

I take pride in my work that I do as placing restorations can be a work of art. No two patients are the same, so it keeps me thinking each day. I am proud to say that since 2006 when I joined my co-op program I am still currently employed with the same dentist 13 years later. Dr. Espeleta has been nothing but patient, kind, supportive in many ways, and has become a huge influence in my life. Coming from a school with a teacher who had those same qualities for her students and being blessed to have been placed in an office with a Dr. who continued on with those same qualities I feel has had a lot to do with the way MVCTC has helped me to become successful!
