The Agriculture and Livestock Production Program at Miami Valley Career Technology Center has been off to flying start this school year in recently hosting Jim Love, Beck’s Hybrids light robotic manager and herbicide specialist on campus to share with students about precision Agriculture and UAV technology.
During the day, Jim shared his extensive knowledge of the UAV/Drone technology available in the industry today and allowed MVCTC students to see first-hand how drones can be a valuable tool and save farmers time and money.
Jim educated the students on cost and logistics along with how UAV precision technology can assist a farmer. As students watched the real-time footage, Jim was able to fly the drone over portions of the MVCTC fully functioning 65-acre crop and livestock farm. Students were able to help with the creation of flight paths using Drone Deploy and watch the drone begin a path and take images of MVCTC school buildings and school farm. Program instructor Bill Hershberger stated, “Jim gives students a great insight into the potential of this emerging and constantly changing technology.” Senior Agriculture and Livestock Production student Lexi Stiner (National Trail) added, “This was an awesome hands-on experience and gave us great educational footage of our school farm.”
MVCTC Agriculture and Livestock Production introduces students to the modern world of agriculture. Students gain experiences and become involved in managing the resources and technologies that are both required and needed to obtain employment or to go on to higher education in agriculture.
Students are involved with the management and operation of a fully functioning 65-acre crop and livestock farm. Students will learn to use modern technology in yield monitoring and soil mapping to manage resources most efficiently. Students are also able to compete in a wide range of FFA career development and leadership activities.
