Wright State and MVCTC Adult Education - Pathway LPN to a BSN

05/23/2019

Wright State University College of Nursing and Health and the Miami Valley Career Technology Center has signed a partnership agreement that establishes a pathway for MVCTC Adult Education LPN graduates to enter an accelerated program for a Bachelor’s in Nursing.

Students who complete the Miami Valley Career Technology Practical Nursing Program, hold a current Ohio License for Practical Nursing and meet prerequisite and entrance requirements are eligible to enter the accelerated Wright State University Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.

The application for the program will be due May of 2020.  Students who meet the admission criteria will enter the five continuous semester accelerated Program in the fall of 2020.  The Program ends with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from Wright State University in the spring of 2022. The pathway will help students manage the cost of education and continue to add to skills that are needed in hospital settings.

The number of jobs available to registered nurses is growing much faster than average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau predicts a 15 percent job growth in this occupation through 2026.

The average cost of a four year BSN in Nursing is in excess of $120,000.  The pathway for LPN to BSN is less than $50,000 and includes the opportunity to be licensed to work in the healthcare field after 12 months of training.  Starting wages at the completion of training and licensure start at approximately $22 an hour in the Dayton area for LPNs.

The pathway offers a BSN at a lower cost while taking advantage of skills and knowledge MVCTC graduates have gained as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

MVCTC Secondary students can benefit from the pathway also as many MVCTC students who complete the Pre-Nursing Programs qualify for $1600 due to scholarships and advanced placement in the MVCTC PN Program.  Additionally, high school students can also meet a number of the WSU prerequisite courses through the College Credit Plus Program (CCP) thus decreasing even more the cost of their degree.

MVCTC’s LPNs are known for their clinical and academic skills from both employers and higher education partners like Wright State University.

Faculty and advisors at both WSU and MVCTC will be available to assist students with questions about the new pathway.

MVCTC appreciates the work with Wright State’s Dean of Nursing, Dr. Debbie Ulrich and MVCTC’s Director of Nursing, Lynn Beaver that has resulted in the agreement that will benefit students.
