Englewood, Ohio – On February 25, MVCTC Junior HOSA members were able to gather together during their meeting to hear from special guest speaker Ms. Rachel Fries, who is the community education coordinator for Life Connection of Ohio. Presenting on the value of organ, eye, and tissue donation, Fries helped students understand what it means to choose to be an organ donor. HOSA members watched a thought-provoking video sharing the testimonials of the many individuals who benefited from a young organ donor and the beautiful impact it left on the organ donor's family. Then, Fries explained how organs, eyes, and tissues can be used to help people in need and how individuals are chosen to receive a donation. After debunking several myths surrounding organ donation, students were able to ask questions, addressing their concerns. The juniors enjoyed the presentation, and the HOSA chapter is very grateful for Ms. Fries for attending the meeting and sharing her area of expertise.
In other business, officers discussed the blood drive HOSA hosted on January 28. In total, 175 students registered to donate blood, and the CBC collected 123 units of blood. This successful turn-out helped hospitals that are currently facing a blood shortage. In addition, the results from the HOSA regional competition at Sinclair Community College on February 22 were revealed to the entire chapter. Students from various labs competed in many events either individually or as part of a team. These competitions involved knowledge exams, skills presentations, and demonstrations of leadership skills. Not only did many competitors perform successfully enough to advance to the state competition, but many competitors also placed first in their respective events. These results are a testament to students' career preparedness in their labs, and the chapter is very proud of how well competitors represented the MVCTC Junior HOSA chapter.
