How fun is this?
MVCTC Pre-Nursing senior Anastasia White (Twin Valley South) made her eighth lifetime blood donation – the equivalent of one gallon – at MVCTC’s Jan. 27 blood drive and became the winner of Community Blood Center’s monthly high school drawing for a pair of Beats headphones!
According to the Community Blood Center Facebook page, all high school donors were entered into the Beats drawing for the month of January when they registered to donate at their high school blood drive. They also received the “Get Loud! Rock & Roll Up Your Sleeve & Donate Blood” high school t-shirt.
“I read about it and thought that’s really cool, but I probably wouldn’t win,” said Anastasia, a music lover who plays clarinet and flute in the Twin Valley South marching and concert bands.
“I thought that’s OK, because it’s about saving somebody’s life. It’s about somebody getting to say, ‘I love you’ to a family member because I gave them some of my blood.”
Anastasia helped MVCTC total 178 donors, including 30 first time donors at the Jan. 27 blood drive. She also donated at the MVCTC fall blood drive, which totaled 204 donors, the most of any high school blood drive so far in the 2022-2023 academic year. MVCTC leads all high schools with 382 donors, 287 donations, and 130 first time donors.
“It’s super exciting, I can’t think of a better recipient,” said Paula Wathen, who coordinates the MVCTC blood drives with Jennifer Foudray. “She’s a very dedicated donor. I’m proud of all the students who take their time to donate to help save lives.”
Anastasia is a member of HOSA Future Health Professionals, the traditional student sponsor group for the MVCTC blood drives. Anastasia is learning to be a nursing aid, plans to study medicine and become a trauma physician.
CBC surprised Anastasia with the award in her nursing class and she was honored at full meeting of all HOSA members.
“As soon as I can donate, I go,” said Anastasia, who started donating at Twin Valley South High School then made multiple donations at the Eaton Community Church blood drives and the Dayton CBC when high school blood drives were cancelled during the pandemic.
“I can’t explain it, I just have a need to help people. My mother donated a lot, and I would ask, ‘Can I go too?’ It’s something embedded in myself to help people.”
The January high school blood drive schedule started slowly after the long holiday break then gathered steam. From Jan. 9 thru Jan. 31 there were 17 high school blood drives, totaling 949 donors, 733 donations and 359 first time donors.
There will be new drawings to win Beats headphones every month of the school year.
