Youth Connections Students Tour Sinclair College
In October, the MVCTC Youth Connections program conducted a field trip with eight seniors to tour Sinclair College in downtown Dayton.
Automotive, aviation, and nursing were just a few of the programs Youth Connection students were interested in learning more about and were able to visit. Students also walked through The Burrell R. Roberts Gallery, which currently has an exhibition on conservation and environmental concerns. They also took photos in the media center and enjoyed lunch at the Tartan Marketplace.
"Allowing students to tour Sinclair introduces them to everything Sinclair has to offer that the students just cannot get from a website," said Doug Pultz, MVCTC CCP English teacher and Youth Connections CBI Instructor. "Once students return from the tour, many are excited to start their Sinclair admissions applications."
In the past, Youth Connections students were encouraged to apply for the Student Enrichment Programs (SEP) Scholarship at Sinclair. The scholarship was especially for Youth Connections graduates who showed academic promise.
About Youth Connections
Youth Connections provides many students the best chance to obtain a high school diploma if they have struggled to earn the required graduation credits at their partner school. Classes are aligned with the Ohio Department of Education Content Standards. The curriculum is competency-based, not seat-time-based.
This program is best for students:
- Disconnected from school due to non-attendance or an inability to progress in a regular school setting
- Lacking credits required for graduation
- Deficient in the areas emphasized in the state of Ohio-mandated graduation tests
Youth Connections includes instruction in a small personal setting with great flexibility and a curriculum that will allow students to receive their high school diploma and gain the skills necessary to lead to long-term employment. Students participate in a Career Based Intervention (CBI) program to provide employability skills, and they work at their own individual pace, not at the speed of the class.
