Englewood, Ohio – The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) named City of Kettering Firefighter, Mr. Dan Wathen, as the recipient of the 2015 Friend of MVCTC Award. Mr. Wathen received the award at the 25th annual All Advisory Dinner held on Thursday, October 1, in the MVCTC Student Activity Center. MVCTC Superintendent, Dr. Nick Weldy, says, “This award is given each year to someone who is always supportive of our mission, our programs, and our students. Those nominated are the professionals who willingly give a tremendous amount of time and talent to ensure MVCTC has continued success”.
Mr. Wathen was nominated by the MVCTC Health and Consumer Science Department for the award. As they stated in the nomination, “Dan can be seen on the MVCTC campus on a regular basis and has been instrumental in getting teachers certified to teach CPR/First Aid in the Health and Consumer Sciences department as well as the instructor for the certification course. He has taught both the Healthcare Provider and Heartsaver courses, and he teaches pediatric first aid to the Early Childhood Education program.”
Mr. Wathen is also very involved with the MVCTC HOSA (Future Health Professionals) Chapter and has mentored students competing in CPR/First Aid, Life Support Skills, CERT, and EMT. Over the past 10 years, most teams that he has mentored have placed in the top three at the state level and one earned 1st place at the National Leadership Conference in Life Support Skills.
Mrs. Ann Patton, MVCTC Health and Consumer Sciences Supervisor shared, “When it comes to dedication, Dan Wathen is my first thought. Dan is dedicated to furthering the knowledge of our students utilizing his expertise in the EMT/Firefighter occupation. Dan leads by example and is a positive role model for students. He has become a valuable part of the MVCTC family.”
The evening also included a district update by Dr. Weldy and the opportunity for the 300 plus business partners to meet with MVCTC staff. During the program advisory committee meetings, business partners, employers, alumni, students and parents worked with the Career Technical instructors to guarantee what is being taught at MVCTC is what students will need to know to be successful in their chosen careers.
